It all began on Rue Royale

In 1862, Louis-Ernest Ladurée opened his first bakery on Rue Royale, in the heart of Paris’s Madeleine district. In a neighbourhood already synonymous with elegance, gastronomy and creativity, a story began that would evolve far beyond the walls of a bakery.

Following the fire that came after the Siege of Paris in 1870–1871, the bakery was reborn as a pâtisserie. A new beginning that laid the foundations for the Ladurée identity and legacy we know today.

AN ICON IS BORN

The story of the Parisian macaron

A few years later, Pierre Desfontaines, Louis-Ernest Ladurée’s grand-nephew, created the Parisian macaron as it would come to be known around the world: two delicate almond meringues joined by a smooth ganache centre.

The creation became one of Ladurée’s most recognisable signatures and, over time, an icon of French elegance and pâtisserie.
